Today in Unnecessary Censorship: “Modern Family” Edition

If you’ve ever seen Modern Family, you know it’s a family-friendly, hilarious, and overall sweet show with a little bit of a bite at times.  You also know that it contains some of the funniest moments in television.

As it turns out, tonight’s episode will feature Lily, Mitchell and Cameron’s little girl, presumably dropping the F-bomb, as part of a plot point where Mitchell and Cam are suddenly faced with a toddler who innocently starts using swear words, as about 99.99% of parents have encountered.

As ABC isn’t likely to have a two-year-old repeatedly swear on camera, the little cherub actually says “fudge”, which is then bleeped out, making it seem as if she says the naughty F word. The magic of television, everyone!

That doesn’t stop Mr. McKay Hatch, founder of the so-called “No Cussing Club” (35,000 members strong boring) from asking ABC to pull the episode.  ABC has thus far ignored Mr. Hatch’s request, as they have better things to do, such as coordinating pizza Friday, and making sure the restrooms are properly stocked with paper towels.

Not that Stephen Levitan, creator and executive producer of Modern Family wasn’t expecting something like this.  Last week he told the Television Critics Association, “”We thought it was a very natural story since, as parents, we’ve all been through this,” Levitan said to EW.com. “We are not a sexually charged show. It has a very warm tone so people accept it more. I’m sure we’ll have some detractors.””

Meanwhile, Mr. Hatch might want to check out ABC’s own Jimmy Kimmel’s “Unnecessary Censorship” on Youtube, and try to find a sense of humor about all of this.
