#Crasstalk COW: Let Your Dim Light Shine

So, you guys had a rough week it sounds like.  On a couple of different days, the Open Threads were outright depressing.

Personally, I try not to do depressing.   Last time I got bummed out, I tricked some Munchkins into climbing onto one another’s shoulders to get momma’s Special Drink from a jug on the top shelf, and then turned them into a totem pole.

Don’t worry, I changed them back.  They’ll get over it, someday.

Ultimately, my little story highlights something important:  We all deal with our down days in different ways.

Some of us keep a diary, as we were reminded of in Thursday’s Open Thread. Though, it’s a little odd when you can see diary entries from both sides of a story:

Often, not only do we confide in those pages, we look for answers.  Though, some questions truly have no answers:

Diaries don’t work for everyone, however.  Some of us need a jolt of energy from above:

Of course, nothing is more self-affirming than realizing that while men may be judgmental pigs, there are some things they can let slide.  From Thursday’s open thread, where a conversation took place regarding the color of certain lady-parts, we have this insightful bit from MiNombreEsChris:

I really don’t have anything to add to that.

Again, thank you to everyone who submitted nominations, and please, please, keep them coming in!  I want to recognize as many folks as possible, and flat out can’t find the time to read through every thread.  Have a great weekend, everyone!

#Crasstalk COW-Art Within Art

For as long as I’ve been a member of the various commenting communities from which we all spawn, my feeling has been that best internet comments are a form of art.  They require a certain element of timing not unlike a comedian’s, as well as an element of wordplay and the ability to draw a picture with words akin to a skilled writer.  Great comments don’t just happen, they take skill, and sometimes, even a a little bit of a set-up.

We saw many examples of this throughout the week around here.  Why?  Well, obviously, because we have some of the smartest, funniest folks on this here internet.

One example comes to us from Thursday evening’s Open Thread, courtesy of Homoviper and CaptainSnarky:

Sometimes, our nominations come from within the same thread in which we announced our last winner.  It’s very meta:

However, as I mentioned above, commenting is indeed an art form at times.  Our winner this week elevated the art of commenting to a discussion of an artistic act during and artistic event.  That’s so meta, it just has to win.   From last night’s Open Thread, our winner is Dancing Queen!  Take a bow, dear! Just don’t stay bent over too long!

On a side note, thank you again to everyone who’s been sending along nominations.  If I could, I’d include every nomination I get into the COW post, but you all don’t have the attention span for that, and you know it.  Please keep them coming to [email protected].

#Crasstalk COW: That’s No Fire Hose, Honey…

Greetings, Crasstalkers!  (Yes, that’s a thing now).

It’s been a crazy week, hasn’t it?  The US government is shutting down (probably), Glenn Beck is leaving/being removed from a daily TV programming role, and this happened:

If anything, I think that proves that #Crasstalk is slowly winning the internet.

But, for as wonderful an occurrence as a Twitteraction with a Real Housefrau is, that alone isn’t enough to get you Comment Of the Week.

No.  the Comment of the Week needs more class, more, I don’t know, oomph than that.  More pop culture goodness, like this:

But, if you really want to take home the title, and all the adulation that goes with it, borrowing words from Tyra Banks and vaginal word play aren’t enough either.

To earn the mantle of Comment of the Week, you need depth, artistic influence, and maybe a little bit of sage advice:

I was always more of a Warhol fan myself, but that requires more self control, one supposes.

As always, thank you to everyone who sent in nominations.  Please, please, keep them coming if you want to see brilliance highlighted.  The address, as always:  [email protected].

Also, under the announcements heading:  Please sign up for the LivingSocial thing on the sidebar, as you can get some really great deals, and they are less creepily written than Groupon (I think).  Also, keep the servers flowing by making your Amazon purchases through the link in the same side bar.  Between the book sluts and the music whores around here, there should be a Crasstalk van by the end of the year.

#Crasstalk COW: Every Day is April Fool’s

Last week, we got a good laugh at a dating related story from a commenter, and the theme of relationships, in their various forms, carried over into the new week.

As we’ve built and shaped this site over the last few months, we’ve gotten to know each other better, and seen friendships and relationships grow and change.   It’s good stuff, really.  All part of the human experience.   If we didn’t have feelings, well, we’d be just like any other animal, like a cow, or something.

Of course, the downside is that sometimes feelings get hurt:

And, while that can actually be amusing, it’s more fun for even the coldest of us to watch people get along:

Even so, we’re a cynical bunch.  We know that not everyone is who they say there are online.  We’ve had enough online dating stories around here to know this.  It’s to the point that even when someone says we’re exactly what they are looking for, we’re still not inclined to believe them:

Of course, if there weren’t services marketing fake girlfriends for the purpose of impressing your friends on social networks, we wouldn’t have all this skepticism.   Though, people like Chris might be skeptical no matter what, and that’s how we get a Comment of the Week:

But really, LCL and Madfall, good for you guys.

And again, thank you to everyone for your submissions for the week.  One request your kind witch makes:  If you send a nom from an open thread, please tell me which thread it is, those things are hard to comb through, and we have a lot of open threads.  Further, if you have the ability to send a screen shot, even better.  The email address, as always: [email protected].  Cheers!

Presenting the #Crasstalk Comment of the Week

Apparently there was a bit of consternation around here a couple weeks ago. Something about an undersized Italian, a guillotine, and what not?  That’s a shame. I guess he’s your bad witch around these parts. I suppose I’ll just have to keep my eye out.

However, that’s far from what I want to discuss in this little missive. Turns out, a smart, funny, interesting commenter base can prosper regardless of what part of the web they call home. Seeing as how you all qualify as such a group, I think it’s only appropriate to celebrate that.

So, it’s with great pleasure that I present to you a continuing feature: Crasstalk’s Comment Of the Week.

Every Friday, we’ll post the funniest, most interesting, or most informative comments of the previous week.  We’ll be running on a bit of a short week this week, but I’m sure a talented group like this will still have plenty of gems before the week is out.  Hint: This witch is particularly swayed by pithy one-liners, because they make great Someecards like this:

Oh, one thing:  I may be a witch, but I’m not all-seeing.   Much like we ask for a certain level of self-policing, we’d ask for any submissions for Comment of the Week to be sent to [email protected].  You can copy/paste, send screen shots, or forward replies from your email used to set up your ID account.   I plan on clearing the account out every week, and doing the same with the address list, and will not reveal anyone’s identity (in case anyone decides to use their personal email to send along a nomination).

At this point, I don’t have any prizes to hand out, so no ruby slippers for anyone.  Seriously, have you seen what precious stones go for these days?  You’d be better off dropping a house on a bitch if you want a pair that badly.

Have fun!
