LOL Feminism with Elizabeth Wurtzel

Elizabeth Wurtzel, author of Prozac Nation, has written an article for The Atlantic about “1% wives”, the rich women with nannies who lunch and shop and are ruining feminism by staying out of the job market. In Wurtzel’s mind, educated women should be in the workplace, pulling their own weight. All I could think while reading it was “Oh, Elizabeth. I always thought you’d be more likeable once you had time to mature a bit.”

I doubt whether the women she is speaking of really had all that much career potential to begin with. A woman who spends her free time shopping at Chanel and getting facials at Tracy Martyn probably wasn’t going to set the workplace on fire. However, Wurtzel labels women who do not work outside the home as women who are hurting feminism, and that is a concern. It’s an excellent example of a feminist getting distracted by an easy issue, rather than addressing the difficult questions that modern women face. Most women don’t fall into the “1% wives” category, and it’s nonsensical to spend time ranting about the few, rich women who are frittering their lives away when the vast majority of women face tougher questions. QOTD: Do You Use Scent?

The word ‘scent’ is very useful, it gets around the whole ‘perfume’ vs ‘parfum’ vs ‘extrait de parfum’ vs ‘eau de parfum’ vs ‘eau parfumee’ vs ‘cologne’ vs ‘eau de toilette’ vs ‘eau de cologne’ business. (These terms have to do with, more or less, a scent’s concentration.)

I’ve used scent since forever. As a teenager I was given a bottle of Chanel No.5 without having any real idea what a big deal it was.

When that ran out I couldn’t afford to replace it, and so moved on to Zen, by Shiseido. I don’t think it’s made anymore, and if it is, I seem to remember reading that it wasn’t the same formula.

Let’s Get Serious: Love, Inspiration and Soul Mates

I want to get serious for a few minutes. I have a friend, a pen pal, whom I’ve been writing to on and off for about seven years. We always get down to the difficult questions and try to come up with an answer that satisfies us both. Sometimes we do disagree, but decide that the answer cannot be an objective one, so we leave it there.

Is Seth MacFarlane A Jackass?

Maybe the better question would be: Is Seth MacFarlane the jackass? In the June 18th edition of The New Yorker, there appears an article that should be one of that magazine’s typical pop culture pufferies; clever, knowing, in-depth, but not too taxing. You know the ones: Tad Friend usually writes them. I usually eat them up. I’m not looking for a scathing take-down of Andrew Stanton or The Artist or Anna Faris, I just want more information than I knew before, a few telling details, some cultural context, a little inside dope and a diverting read.
