The Scars Prove You Were There

Nobody wants to be on a first-name basis with her orthopedic surgeon.

But Will is cool. I met Will after one of my bike accidents – the first time I flipped over my handlebars, after a red-winged blackbird thought I was getting a little too close to his baby momma and pinged himself right off the front part of my helmet. If you’ve never been attacked by a red-winged blackbird, I can assure you:  the little dudes do not hold back. At first, I didn’t realize what had hit me. I hit my brakes hard, forcing my bike to buck like a wild mustang, throwing myself from the seat and over the handlebars. Continue reading

I Am a Victim of the War on Diet Coke

The problem with corporations is that they never think of you. They get you hooked on their damn products, desperate for their damn products, and then — poof! — in the most nefarious of fashions, they make it difficult to get their product.

Such is the case with Diet Coke and its new imposter, regular Coca-Cola Classic.

Sandusky: It Was ‘Horseplay’, Not Rape

This was one of the most bizarre interviews I’ve seen in a long time.<!–more–>

Former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky admits to showering with boys, admits to ‘horseplay’ with boys, and, when asked by Bob Costas of NBC News, point-blank, ‘Are you sexually attracted to under-aged boys?’ says “I enjoy young people. I love to be around them… but no, I’m not sexually attracted to young boys,’

From a journalistic standpoint — damn, Bob Costas. I give him Mike Wallace-esque props here. He asked simple, straightforward, direct questions. He also managed to not throw his pen across the room and scream, “SERIOUSLY?”

Today is Veterans Day

The First World War ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed in June of 1919. The fighting, however, ended several months earlier — with hostilities ending between the Allies and Germany on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month. The picture above was taken at 10:58 AM on November Eleventh, 1918, two minutes before the cease-fire that effectively ended World War I went into effect.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, President Woodrow Wilson in 1919 declared November 11th to be a day to remember the Armistice, saying: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.” Continue reading

Joe Frazier Dies at Age 67

Joe Frazier was born in South Carolina in 1944. In his autobiography, he says he got into boxing when his uncle took a look at his nephew’s build, and said “that boy is going to be another Joe Louis” Frazier built his own heavy bag, out of a burlap sack filled with rags, corncobs, and bricks, and hung it from a tree on his back yard. He wrapped his hands in his mother’s stockings.     Continue reading
