Saturday Night DJ Party: Just a Few Electro-House Choons

I put together a few electro-house bangers for you kids. This mix is full of track from one of my absolute favorite producers/remixers/deejays — Mord Fustang. He’s a young Estonian producer who has taken the deep bass lines and synth madness from dubstep and put them to work in house tracks. The results are absolutely fooking bananas (he was recently named up-and-comer of the year on Beatport). Untz.

A Solar Eclipse of the Heart

Turn around. Every now and then it gets a little bit lonely if you’re not an astronomy nerd aficionado and don’t realize there was a solar eclipse visible yesterday. The eclipse could be spotted in much of the Northern Hemisphere from Japan all the way to the state of Kansas.

A homeowner in San Rafael, Calif. shot this video of what happens when light from the eclipse shines down through some leafy trees. Sunlight ghost bats!

Watch Medical Students Diagnose People on the Internet

I learned about a weirdly cool message board yesterday thanks to an old friend who happens to be in medical school. Apparently there’s a forum where medical students can go to practice diagnosing people’s diseases based only on photographs of skin lesions, bizarre growths and other disorders. It’s strangely fun reading the educated guesses of soon-to-be medical professionals. The American Airlines Lifetime AAirpass Is Basically the Greatest Thing Ever

What’s the greatest single thing you could ever own? Normally I would say it’s either a  shark tank in your basement or a professional sports team, but that would be wrong. The best thing you could ever own is clearly the AAirpass, the legendary golden ticket issued by American Airlines that gives its holder lifetime free airfare anywhere in the world.

As the L.A. Times reported over the weekend, American Airlines created its amazing open-ended lifetime ticket back in 1981 as a way to raise capital amid high Reagan-era interest rates, but now AAirpass is losing millions of dollars a year and the airline is trying to boot some of the program’s most frequent fliers.  Continue reading

Maurice Sendak is a Salty Bastard

In honor of Maurice Sendak’s death this morning we’re re-publishing this post from January. R.I.P., Maurice.

If you missed The Colbert Report this week you didn’t see Stephen’s hilarious two-part interview with legendary children’s book author Maurice Sendak.

Sendak is a curmudgeon of nearly Slavoj Žižek-ian proportions, which made his sit-down with Colbert so perfect.  Continue reading

Floyd Mayweather’s Entourage Includes 50 Cent, the Wrestler Triple H and… Justin Bieber

Yes, you read that correctly. Saturday night Floyd “Money” Mayweather made his grand entrance at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, ahead of his title fight with Miguel Cotto. It turned out to be a great matchup but one of the highlights of the night was when Mayweather came out dressed in a Michael Jackson-esque studded leather jacket and accompanied by 50 Cent, the hulking professional wrestler Triple H and teen pop songstress Justin Bieber.  Continue reading
