I had a conversation with a few people last week about “bizarre people at work” situations. These are the best stories on earth because they are cathartic for everyone involved. We get to tell our whacko stories about lazy, strange, rude, incompetent, evil or just plain confusing. We get to read other people’s stories and discover that we are not alone – others are surrounded by the crazy.
Please share. We need to distract someone among us who is having a difficult day. Let us distract this individual through the strange and bizarre.
I’ll share one, but I can share a bunch more. I was managing a team of several people. Several people in the office were gay. It was a very open, accepting environment. One woman, who was a very vocal gay activist, walked into my office one day. She shut the door and said:
“I think you should know that I’m bisexual.”
She then opened the door and walked out. That was the complete extent of the conversation.
Several years later, I found out she was dating a guy in the office and they got married. At the time, I found the interaction bizarre because it was prompted by nothing that I was aware of and was so brief. I didn’t tell anyone about it as it didn’t affect her work. Now I guess she worried that I’d find out about the boyfriend. I wouldn’t have cared. The entire office was inter-dating constantly.
I’ve got much better stories than this but the interaction was so odd out of context.
