Federal workers being unpaid, national parks closing, flu vaccines not being tracked: these are some of the many consequences of the federal government’s being shut down. Despite Newt Gingrich’s pledge, the National Zoo’s Panda Cam, which was deemed “non-esssential,” has gone dark.
While the world is deprived from viewing the antics of Tian Tian, Mei Xiang and Butterstick III, there are other means to get one’s panda fix/procrastination-enabling mechanism. Here is a list of zoos and other organizations that have panda cams:
- Atlanta Zoo (US) – with TWO yet-unnamed panda cubs.
- Adelaide Zoo (Australia).
- Bifengzxia Nature Preserve (China), via Explore.org (Panda Cam 1, 2, 3 (panda toddlers) and 4)
- Chiang Mai Zoo (Thailand) – click “Lin Ping LIVE,” requires Windows Media or Flip4Mac.
- Chengdu Research Base of Panda Breeding (China).
- Edinburgh Zoo (Scotland) – with a possibly pregnant panda.
- Memphis Zoo (US).
- Ocean Park (Hong Kong/China).
- San Diego Zoo (US).
- Ueno Zoo (Japan).
- Time Magazine (stuffed toy pandas).
- The Daily Beast (a fish named Panda).
