Here’s what we know.
According to the New York Times Lede Blog, at least 10 people were shot at the Washington Navy Yard today and several people were killed. One suspect was killed at the scene and police say two more potential suspects are still on the loose.
A witness reports that one suspect, a white man, was wearing a tan military uniform with a beret, and carrying a handgun. The other suspect, a black male in his 50’s, carried a “long gun” while wearing an olive-drab military-style uniform. It is unclear if either are actual military personnel, and what their connection to the Navy Yard may be. Unsubstantiated claims say this may be a “workplace incident,” as opposed to terrorism.
Three people, including a Metropolitan Police officer, are being treated for gunshot wounds and are in critical condition. All three victims are expected to survive their injuries.
Multiple schools in the area are on lockdown, and despite early conflicting reports, it would appear at this hour the neighboring Bolling Air Force Base is not the scene of an additional crime. Flights have resumed at the National Airport, but residual delays are still being reported.
President Obama has addressed the situation and spoke on the violence occurring on Monday.
“We are confronting yet another mass shooting, and today it happened on a military installation in our nation’s capital,” he said. “Today they [employees] face the unimaginable violence that they would not have expected here at home. Obviously we are going to be investigating, as we do so many of these shootings, sadly.”
The president added about the shootings that officials would be looking for ways to do “everything we can to prevent them.”
