If you want to take care of your hair but hate spending tons of cash on beauty products, don’t fret. There’s actually a ton of amazing stuff at your local drugstore that can often do the job just as well as any high-end product, if not better. Here are a few of my favorite tried-and-true drugstore haircare products.
- The entire Suave Professionals line is amazing, but two items really stand out for me. The Moroccan Infusion Oil and the Keratin infused dry shampoo are both fantastic buys. They’re very inexpensive and both work great at what they do. If you’re looking for a light oil to help increase shine and decrease breakage/split ends, the infusion oil works very well as similar argan oils for a much more reasonable price. I typically apply a couple of pumps to my wet hair after getting out of the shower, focusing on the ends of my hair which are prone to breakage. The dry shampoo is probably the best dry shampoo that I’ve tried and doesn’t leave a weird gray residue in your hair.
- If you like getting hot oil treatments for your hair, try African Royale Hot Six hair oil. This stuff is amazing. You can use this every other week or so as a hot oil treatment, Simply warm up the bottle (I typically run it under hot water for a short period of time), apply a small amount to your hair and focus on the ends, and leave on for 15-20 minutes. I usually wrap my hair in a plastic bag or towel and read for a little bit before rinsing it out. You can also mix it with egg yolk to help increase shine.
- If you’re looking for a shampoo/conditioner set that’s paraben free, give Yes 2 Carrots a try. I really like the way it smells and it’s a more natural option you can find at drugstores.
- If you blowdry or flat iron your hair, you need to use a heat protectant spray. I’m extremely fond of the Garnier Fructis spray for protecting my hair from the awful damage I’m doing to it with a blowdryer.
- If you’re looking for natural highlights for your hair, try Sun-In. I’ve had ridiculous success just spritzing my hair with it and then going outside without a hat. It helps to increase very natural looking highlights in your hair by speeding up the natural process of the sun already lightening your hair. I have very dark hair and it lightens parts of my hair to a dark auburn color.
- Sally Hershberger Wave Spray. I really like using this to bring out my hair’s natural waves when I’m doing something that requires a more glam (read: GIANT) hairdo. This is definitely one of those products where a light touch goes a long way and a heavy touch will just make your hair greasy, so even though it’s a bit on the pricier range, it will last you for a loooooong time.
- If you’re not already buying the 1 pound box of bobby pins online, the Goody Colour Collection pins are a great choice. They come in a variety of colors to blend with your hair.
- Last, but not least, I’m obsessed with ribbon hair ties and they’ve finally trickled down to the drugstore for those of us who hated spending so much money on them online or at Sephora, and couldn’t figure out how to craft them ourselves out of ribbon.
If you have any great product recommendations for haircare from the drugstore, please post them in the comments and share your beauty knowledge.
