Mad Men Post-Mortem: Dark Shadows

Let’s talk about last night’s episode and share our thoughts, links to excellent recaps, and (of course) hilarious gifs! A few of my own thoughts after the cut.

WARNING: THE POST AND COMMENTS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS. DO NOT ENTER IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE SPOILED. THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING, JERK.

A few quick notes in no particular order because I accidentally deleted last night’s episode off of my DVR after watching it last night and I’m working off of my memory:

  • Don’s love note, or rather, a normal note conveying to his wife where he is that is simply brimming with affection simply because they actually love each other. “Lovely Megan — I went to get a light bulb. When I get back, I’ll see you better. Love, Don.” I can’t help but feel sorry for Betty, finding this sweet note in this way at this moment though I don’t like how she uses Sally as a pawn in her hurt-Don-and-his-jerk-new-beautiful-wife game. Which brings me to…
  • Matthew Weiner, don’t think we didn’t notice the drawing of the blue whale with arrows in its large back as our Fat Betty is wearing a blue dress whose silhouette makes her look much larger too (just in case the viewers didn’t get that Fat Betty is still fat, lulz). This is one of those things that I’m conflicted about–Weiner’s symbolism can be lovely and refreshing because it happens so infrequently in most television shows, but I feel as though I’m reaching symbolism over-saturation here. Paint with a light hand once in a while, would you? I realize that you want Mad Men to be a television novel, but novels get annoying when they’re heavy-handed with LOOK-AT-ME symbolism too (see Don DeLillo).
  • Weight Watchers was pretty terrible back then, huh? Ladies come on! Go for a run!
  • I like to see Roger getting back in the game and I like that he has learned to feel remorse for ruining his ex-wife’s feelings of home at her new apartment. If only he could have, you know, not ruined his ex-wife’s feelings of home at her new apartment.
  • I absolutely loved seeing Don feel threatened by Ginsberg (it’s Ginsberg, right? as opposed to Ginsburg?). Finally! Don is no longer the PYT of Madison Ave and he has to fight for his position. He is Roger to Ginsberg’s Peter Campbell. (Notice, by the way, that Don is wearing the blue suit look that Peter wore several years back. It’s no longer a cutting-edge style and is now acceptable for a 40 year old partner.)
  • Moar Ginsberg, plz.
  • Oh, I almost forgot! Sally is turning into quite the delightful little bitch, right?! She is going to be hell on wheels when she is a teenager.

What did you guys think? And what did “Dark Shadows” mean anyway? Is that a reference to that horrid Johnny Depp movie coming out? You know what, forget I ever said that. No Dark Shadows references, please.
