Mad Men Post-Mortem: Mystery Date

Let’s talk about last night’s episode and share our thoughts, links to excellent recaps, hilarious gifs, whatever floats your Mad (Men) boat! A few of my own thoughts after the cut.

WARNING: THE POST AND COMMENTS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS. DO NOT ENTER IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE SPOILED. THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING, JERK.

  • Regarding the never-before-seen Andrea–who goes up to a former flame like that after several years? Jeeeeez, lady, take a chill pill. Also, Don Draper was sexier in this episode than he has been in a long time, foreshadowy cough notwithstanding. He should get hallucinatory fevers all the time! That being said, Don’s sexy and violent hallucination was super weird, right? That’s the only time the audience has seen Don being brutally violent. (I think. Correct me if I’m wrong.)
  • I loved Ginsburg’s disgust with everyone’s excitement over those brutal murders (props to Jenna for the link in last night’s liveblog). (He would be horrified by the Internet, to be sure.) I’m a little confused, however, about his spontaneous (?) Cinderella monologue after the pitch meeting. Did he intend to do that from the get-go? Does he understand that Don doesn’t like that? Remember Don’s embarrassingly drunk copycat pitch after he won that advertising award? I’m sure he does.
  • I loved Sally’s whiny phone call with Don, and I never tire of the “haunted mansion” digs.  To continue on the topic of Sally, Henry’s mom seems like kind of a nut–and not the interesting, funny kind of nut, I’m talking the creepy, potentially dangerous sort of nut. She totally relished in poor little Sally’s fears. (How adorably sad was it that Sally chose to sleep under the couch, like the only woman who survived the famous murders?)
  • Greg is the worst. He says, “Nobody lied to anybody” while he’s telling Joan a lie. The reappearance of an accordion as their marriage collapsed was masterful.
  • Peggy getting all sassy and hustling Roger out of several hundred dollars was the highlight of this episode, hands down. Her drunken awkwardness with Dawn was, on the other hand…well it was interesting. If even (relatively) open-minded Peggy has trouble connecting with a person of color, how does it feel for the others in the office? And more importantly, how does it feel for poor Dawn? We should give Peggy credit for trying, I guess. And I’m glad that she felt guilty about her eyes lingering on her purse; at least she’s aware of how unfair she was being.
  • Let’s get back to Joan. I felt my heart stop when she said to Greg, “You’re not a good man. You never were. Even before we were married, and you know what I’m talking about.” And how she pulls her hand away forcefully? Good lord, Hendricks. Superb. I really thought they were never going to address the (cover the little ones’ ears) R-A-P-E, but boy am I glad they did.
  • Do I even need to talk about the closing song choice? (OK so the one I linked to is a cover. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.)
Overall, I loved this episode so, so much more than last week’s. What say you, darlings? Let’s talk!
