Pfizer recently announced that it’s recalling two kinds of oral contraceptives. Oh noes! Here’s what you need to know if you’re a lady who thinks you may be affected, or if you know a lady who may be affected which in turn affects you (if you get my meaning guys, amirite?):
- The brands included in the recall are Lo/Ovral®-28 and Norgestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol tablets. These tablets were manufactured and packaged by Pfizer Inc., commercialized by Akrimax Rx Products and labeled under the Akrimax Pharmaceuticals brand.
- The pills are not being recalled because of any health concerns, so you can relax on that front. Rather, the pills in the affected batches were placed in their blister packs in the wrong sequence, causing women to take the pills out of order which, evidently, is bad. Seriously, that’s all I can tell you here. As a straight man, I’m on top of how condoms work, and I’ve got a passing familiarity with how the pill works, but if I have to get into details I’m going to give you some bad information.
- If you’re not sure whether your birth control is part of the recall, you can go to your local pharmacy, talk to your doctor/midwife/doula/shaman, or call 1-877-509-3935.
- Go here for the official announcement from FDA.gov. You’ll find a handy chart with the lot numbers of the affected birth control packages at the end of the recall announcement page so you can see if your birth control is part of the recall.
Good luck! Here’s hoping you’ve got the Michael Bay birth control, not the Bill Buckner* birth control.
