Socrates Died Last Week

No really, Socrates died last week.

Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira is a Brazilian footballer who was one of the legends of the 1982 Brazilian World Cup side that many consider one of the greatest teams ever put together.

Socrates himself was known for the heel pass and his amazing vision on the field, and is widely considered one of the greatest players of all time. But really he transcended his sport by living an incredibly varied and rich life.

Socrates was a licensed doctor who obtained his medical degree while playing professional soccer. After retiring from the sport, he practiced medicine in Brazil. He also was an outspoken opponent of the military junta that ruled Brazil in the 1980s, led his team Corinthians as they made public demonstrations on the field and wrote a long-running newspaper column about politics and economics. At the age of 50, in 2004, he signed on as a player-coach for a tiny English club and actually made an appearance in a match.

Oh and he drank and smoked heavily throughout his playing career. The man lived life to the fullest. Rest in peace, Socrates.
