Great Sports Movies To Get You Off The Couch…Maybe

If you are going to be sitting on the couch and watching something at make it something that might motivate you to get off of it. “Whip It” did not make the list, just so you know.

1. Victory (1981)

This soccer film stars Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone, Max Von Sydow, and even has a few professional players including Pele (some consider him the greatest player of all time). It’s about a P.O.W. camp in Nazi Germany that forms a soccer team that agrees to play the German national team.

2. I Scored A Goal In The FIFA World Cup Final

Scoring a goal in the World Cup final, an event that happens once every four years, could be considered the absolute pinnacle of personal achievement in the team sport of soccer. It IS better to win the actual game, too. However, the two events together has the power to turn an unknown player into a legend instantaneously. This film documents the living players that have scored a goal in the final of the world cup and highlights their achievement in a very unique and moving way. A documentary about the “Rumble in the Jungle” between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. Talk about intense!

This film, along with Mean Streets, put Robert De Niro on the map. He plays a terminally ill catcher whose friendship with his pitcher evolves through a season in the majors.

5. Hoop Dreams

The story of Arthur and William, two kids from Chicago’s inner-city, and their dream to play professional basketball.
