- A suspected US drone attack is responsible for the deaths of five militants in the South Waziristan region of Pakistan. The dead were militant leaders who were suspected of working with al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
- Today is election day in Ireland. Seven candidates are running for President, including a former IRA fighter. His success in attracting voters (though he is not expected to win) is being seen as a sign of reconciliation between former political enemies in the country.
- China is cracking down on people who spread rumors on the internet. The government has reported that it has arrested three people for online gossip after approving new “cultural development guidelines” last week.
- Think the local politics in your community are a mess? Be glad you don’t live in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where the city council, the mayor, and city financial officers have such a dysfunctional relationship that the city is literally going broke.
- A report on the environment on Pluto’s “twin” planet Eris. Really cool, and pretty pictures as well.
