Should You Care About Pet Sales Bans?

Yesterday, it was announced that the Humane Pet Acquisition Proposal would be making its way back to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Last year, the city attempted to pass legislation making the sale of dogs and cats illegal within city limits.

The proposed legislation takes it one step further this time: San Fran wants to ban fish, reptiles, amphibians, and birds from being available for sale except as food.

Though it would only affect one city, naturally blogs and news sites were awash with outraged commenters. While there is plenty of information available regarding the often inhumane and dangerous treatment of animals raised for wholesale, few people have considered the same standards of “care” exist for our less-furry friends– and thanks to the increased demand for “exotic” fish and reptiles, many pet store employees have even less education on how to care for these animals.

So, do we care about tarantula overcrowding? Does the SFSPCA really euthanize goldfish, as they claimed yesterday? Does the legislation go too far? Or does it even matter, since you live in Branson, MO, and your state doesn’t even want to stop puppy mills from existing?
