Five Earworms

For the past few weeks, I’ve had the same five songs stuck in my head. Now I want them to get stuck in your head!

Gotye feat. Kimbra, Somebody That I Used to Know
Even though this is an old song, for some reason every time I hear it again it’s guaranteed to stay in my brain. Record earworm playback: 3 days.

[Editor’s note: Though they only share a name, Elliott Smith’s Somebody that I Used to Know is superior]

Walk off the Earth, Somebody That I Used to Know (cover)
This one gets stuck in my head for the same reason as the song above, but it is a lovely cover plus they are all playing one guitar at the same time. Brilliant!

Fun., We Are Young
Even though the first verse of the song clearly points to a creepy abusive relationship, the chorus of the song and the lovely harmonies between Janelle Monáe and Nate Ruess mean that I have fallen in love with this song. I hate myself for it, but then I listen to the acoustic version and I forget. Also, I feel like pointing out I couldn’t really understand the verses so I found out about that “scar” line by reading a comment somewhere on the Internet.

AWOLNATION, Not Your Fault
What is it with me and songs about fighting and yelling? I don’t really know, but I love the juxtaposition of the poppy verses with the screamy chorus.

Young the Giant, Cough Syrup

This is currently my favorite Young the Giant song. They talk about zombies and fishes in the see, and I don’t get it but I love it. The whole album is fantastic, I definitively recommend it.

Which songs have been stuck in your head lately?
