To a New Yorker there is nothing as sacred as the perfect “slice.” Even if you just arrived in the city an hour ago, you are practically weaned on the perfect balance of cheese, sauce, and crust. And we don’t need no fancy toppings to make it the best thing in the world. Whether you’re at one of the innumerable Ray’s Pizzas, or some joint you came across during a random jaunt, since it’s pizza in NYC, how can it go wrong? Making it too fussy is sacrilege. Kentucky Fried Food Stamps?

Do you know what four things I never thought would go together? KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Food Stamps. Somehow, I thought that when it came right down to what offerings we’d give to the poorest among us, fast food items just wouldn’t be on that list. Apparently I’d be wrong — so very wrong since Yum! Brands, the parent company of KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, is lobbying to allow their restaurants in Kentucky, America’s seventh most overweight state, to accept food stamps. Continue reading

The Worst of American Cuisine

Do you ever watch TV and see an advertisement for some food item that conjures the worst feelings in your normally placid yum-place, but really you just want to know why? Why does this particular thing exist? Who buys it? And just who is in the food laboratory wearing their “find something weird” hat and thinking up the most excessive, noxious thing ever slapped between two pieces of bread and making the decision that, “Yup, a veritable horde of people will eat this!” All you really know is that guy should be slapped with a heaping KFC slop bowl.
