The Case Against College Football

Referee

Friends, Netizens, countrymen, lend me your ears. For I come to bury college football, not to praise it. I don’t like college football. There, I said it. I’ve never really liked it. Oh I’ve tried watching it, but there are so many flaws in the college system that it makes my brain hurt. Every couple of years I forget what I have learned and catch a game on TV. And then I remember: “I hate this game”. Continue reading →

QOTD: Do You Have a Favourite Quotation or Poem?

I’m really fond of the line “shine a bright light”, meaning to expose cruel or shady dealings that need some sunshine on them so they will whizzle up and disappear like a salted slug.

Lots of others, too.  “Sue the Bastards.”

“Without libraries what have we? We have no past and no future.”  Ray Bradbury. Continue reading →

The Daily Sausage – Tuesday Edition

“Decades from now, Americans will visit the memorials to those who were lost on 9/11. They will run their fingers over the places where the names of those we loved are carved into marble and stone and wonder at the lives they led. Standing before the white headstones in Arlington and in peaceful cemeteries and small-town squares in every corner of our country, they will pay respects to those lost in Afghanistan and Iraq. They will see the names of the fallen on bridges and statues; at gardens and schools.

And they will know that nothing can break the will of a truly United States of America. They will remember that we have overcome slavery and Civil War; bread lines and fascism; recession and riots; Communism and, yes, terrorism. They will be reminded that we are not perfect, but our democracy is durable and that democracy – reflecting, as it does, the imperfections of man – also gives us the opportunity to perfect our union. That is what we honor on days of national commemoration – those aspects of the American experience that are enduring and the determination to move forward as one people.” – President Barack Obama – Continue reading →

QOTD: Do You Remember Anything Positive About 9/11?

Today is a day that I won’t turn on the news or the television. I cannot handle the grief porn that will inevitably spew out of the media. I choose to remember 9/11 a different way.

I choose to remember how we came together as a nation, overlooked our differences and helped one another. I was actually in France over 9/11 and couldn’t get back to Bermuda where we were living at the time. We ended up in London. I was there when “God Bless America” was played in front of Buckingham Palace. I had people stop me in the streets and tell me how sorry they were after hearing me speak in my American accent to my 2 year old and 6 month old children. I remember the kindness. When the Loons in Your Party Show Up at Campaign Events

Oh, Mitt. What would you do if you didn’t have staunch supporters like Clint Eastwood, chair-grousing, grizzled old looney bear, and Pat Robertson, crazy, evil, soul-destroying chaos wizard, to make your campaign fun! and exciting!? Well, we just don’t know. Maybe instead you could hitch your campaign to a crap wagon and throw it off a cliff into a ditch of empirically plummeting poll numbers? Yes, that’s the ticket. Hansel & Gretel:  Witch Hunters is scheduled to come out in January 2013 (trailer after the jump).  You can see how the pitch went- “It’s a monster-killing movie!  Only with Hansel & Gretel!  Everyone’s heard of Hansel & Gretel!” Continue reading →
