Okay, so the title of this post is a little misleading, because turmeric isn’t really “lowbrow.” But for years I’ve thought of it as “saffron coloring for the fiscally challenged.” I love to use it in rice because it makes it so bright and cheerful for pennies a batch. It’s also good for you – which makes it pretty much a win/win. Then over Christmas I was gifted with a good sized amount of saffron. Saffron! The most expensive spice in the world! I’ve been hoarding it because…well, it’s the most expensive spice in the world. Continue reading

I originally wrote a draft of this piece about a week ago, before the first round of reviews of Guillermo del Toro’s Monsters Vs. Robots epic, Pacific Rim, hit the internet. I scrapped it because after the very positive reviews hit, I figured that Pacific Rim was back on track for a monster opening weekend.
Instead, I came across another hit piece from Variety pegging Pacific Rim for a lackluster opening, underperforming against Grown-Ups 2.
So, I decided to resurrect the premise and ask: why is Hollywood trying to kill Pacific Rim? Continue reading

I’m the new kid at The State Job, so I got stuck on overnights. Which is fine. I have to pay my dues and learn the job and I get to make stale jokes about being a vampire. Continue reading

You can find your state’s current reproductive laws on the Guttmacher Institute. You can also usually find current proposed bills on Open States, or on your state legislature’s website. Continue reading
I love movies. More importantly, I love seeing movies before almost everyone else. Certain movies will get me to the theater at midnight, so I figured I’d see them first and write a review the next day so you can get a real review from someone that isn’t a Hollywood hack.
In this installment… Pacific Rim. Continue reading
I used to love Choose Your Own Adventure and Which Way books. The books all started the same. Then you’d be able to pick what the lead character did, and flip the appropriate page in the book, and carry on the story from there.
This is a variation on that. I start the story. Then you take over and finish the story in the comments. This is a great way to capitalize on my insanity and laziness.
Thanks to Ms_Print for inspiring this week’s story.
