Pantone declared that this is the year of green with their color of the year being PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald. This has led to a host of articles about incorporating it into your life in some surprising ways. Especially in pants, for some reason everyone is trying to make green pants happen. And shoes. I don’t get it, but that’s me. Continue reading
Let’s take a break from the pretty, and look at the practical. Everyone needs to eat, right? Let’s get into some heirloom or heritage vegetables for your garden. They’re tasty. Continue reading
It’s rare you leave the house without some form of accessory. Be it a watch, cute shoes, a decent handbag, or even a spectacular manicure. All of these add usually add to an outfit. So why not do this in your garden space? Continue reading
Blue. It’s calming. It’s the color of the sea and the sky. It’s ice and snow. It’s the eyes of a long lost lover who left you standing in the rain or a bucket of the cleanest, purest crystal me…oh, wrong article. We’ll get back to that later.
Let’s talk about blue for the yard. Blue is my favorite color. My back wall is painted that color. My closet is full of blue shirts. It reminds me of France and the coast. Alas blue plants really don’t work so well here in the desert, but to make up for that most of my containers are blue. Green bounces nicely off a deep blue.
Below are 15 blue or blue flowering plants that I love or have come to love. Continue reading
Purple. It’s the color of royalty, one of the three colors of Mardi Gras, and one of the must have colors in any garden space. It can heat up a cool toned garden or cool off a hot toned garden. It works well as a wall color, but for me it shows its best face is when its attached to a plant. Here’s a list of 15 purple flowers and plants that you can add to your garden for some truly amazing results. Programming note: for this series, I am trying to feature new and upcomming hybrids and little used plants that people aren’t as familiar with as well as some of my personal favorite plants in the color theme. It’s one of my favorite times of the year: garden planning season. The plant catalogues are arriving en masse here at Casa de McBoy. They are being furiously marked up and at the same time I am making spaces in the garden for new things to replace stuff that was overgrown or didn’t make it through the last freeze or just because I want it in the yard because I am rethinking a section of it. Continue reading
This past weekend, my partner and I went to Los Angeles for a quick weekend away from life in the desert. In the weeks leading up to the trip, he kept hammering me with questions about what I wanted to do while we were there. This is generally how the conversation went (his part is in Italics):
So, any thoughts on things to do while we’re there? Not really. Was there any shopping you wanted to do?
Hon, I’ve been banned for life from all the McQueen stores in the country and you get mad when I buy things you think we don’t need for the house. The only thing that’s even on my radar is the Kubrick exhibit at LACMA and there will be hell to pay if I’m not allowed to go. Continue reading
We’re a month into the New Year, and most of us made a resolution to get back into shape this year. Maybe we can take a look at some icons of the video fitness industry and get some inspiration. Get your leotard and legwarmers out, put on some shitty dance music, and let’s grapevine our way into Where Are They Now: Let’s Get Physical edition. Continue reading
