The US Postal Service has released a list of post offices that will be studied for closure in order to deal with an ongoing budget shortfall. Since everyone is sending pointless e-cards instead of good old fashioned over priced paper greeting cards and paying bills online the amount of first class mail has been in steady decline. California Has a Dropout Problem

Prior to the past school year California had no way to track every K-12 student and so was unable to accurately report the dropout rate. The reason being that a student transferring districts looks the same to the state as a student dropping out and an entirely new student entering another district. With a new way to track each student California can now report that the dropout rate for 2010 was 18.2%. As early as 8th grade the dropout rate is 3.5%. That means that upwards of 17,000 8th graders don’t make it to the 9th grade. But the dropout rates vary widely based on several factors. Continue reading

Building a Nuclear Reactor at Home is Illegal

Richard Handl is a Swedish man smart enough to obtain radioactive elements and attempt to assemble a nuclear reactor, but dumb enough to do so at home without a license from the regulatory agency in Sweden.  Needless to say they would have turned down his application.

It’s hard to believe that this doesn’t violate the Blogspot terms of service, but he ran a blog chronicling his adventures which involve obtaining radium, americium, thorium, uranium and other elements.
