Coming Attractions: “True Detective” Season 2 First Look

Here’s the first trailer for the hotly anticipated second season of True Detective.

A few thoughts:

  • Colin Farrell (California Highway Patrol officer Ray Velcoro, whose official description reads: “a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him.”) looks greasy and that mustache is chewing his face. We’re thinking this means he’s either a Texas transplant or someone who really, really loved the year 1976.
  • Vince Vaughn (Frank Semyon, “a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.”) is looking more svelte than we’ve seen him in decades and he’s rocking Swingers hair. This could be a really good sign. We’ll still have to see if he can shake off the Owen Wilson accompanied “horrible comedy spiral of irreversible doom” he’s been in lately.
  • Rachel McAdams (Sheriff Ani Bezzirades, “a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with others and the system she serves.”) looks a bit out of place as the hard-scrabble cop. This may be a test for the actress who was heretofore fond of affable, light fare. She’s going to test her “Amy Adams mettle” here with her frizzy highlights and face set with consternation. The thing is, though, in order to pull it off, it’s a full immersion type of thing. No knowing smirks or fast blinking cuteness she’s been known for. If you look at Amy Adams’ work “grit” as a personality is a full commitment.
  • Not sure what to make of Taylor Kitsch (Paul Woodrugh, “a war veteran and motorcycle officer for the California Highway Patrol, running from a difficult past and the sudden glare of a scandal that never happened.”) at this point. He looks confused and conflicted, and perhaps with more than a few shades of menace. Maybe that’s the point.
  • EVERYONE HAS TIRED EYES!
  • Bolo tie and brass knuckles spotting on Farrell. Not a good sign.
  • It looks like we’re exploring some part of California that’s in a relative spotlight void; where dirty deals are done and people go missing. We’re thinking wherever this place is, it’s a character in the story. We’re probably going to be in a neglected town that’s in the shadow of highly trafficked larger cities and how policing and response to crime plays by different rules.
  • The overall tone of the trailer is “glum.” As in, everyone is just about to have the worst week of their lives and it’s just Monday afternoon.

The new season starts June 21st, 2015, on HBO.
