Song of the Summer 2014

We can’t have another Blurred Lines fiasco, people.  It’s already past the fourth of July and we don’t have a unifying anthem for the few warm days we will experience this year.  It would be cute if Pharrell had waited until June to release Happy, but then he wouldn’t have given us that red carpet moment with the hat, would he have?

I’m going to start you off with a few songs I think could serve as this year’s Song of the Summer, and open up the floor for your candidates.

First up, Clean Bandit (featuring Jess Glynne) and their song “Rather Be.”  This song is easy breezy, the video is fun and devoid of foolishness.

Our second offering is Marina and the Diamonds’ “Oh No.”  Yes, it’s four years old.  But this song has not broken into the US market at all so it’s still fair game.  I have no idea why Marina doesn’t have a stronger following in the US, and I think we should fix that little problem.

After finding out about her earlier this year, I am starting to have a thing for St. Vincent.  I don’t know if she’s going to end up being what Gaga should have been, if she’s going to flame out or will end up the next Prince.  All I know is, she is going to do something awesome, and soon.  This song might be a little too funky for a “Song of the Summer” but it’s got a great beat and bass line.

I’ll leave you with the Royksopp and Robyn production of “Do It Again.”  It’s hard for Robyn to do anything wrong, and she certainly delivers the goods in this song.
