Magical Realism In Music Videos

When I look for music videos, I am always interested in finding productions with a theme of magical realism. What’s magical realism? A genre where magic elements are a natural part in an otherwise mundane, realistic environment. (thanks, wiki wiki wiki!) Here’s a collection of videos that I think fit the bill.

Goldfrapp – Strict Machine. Is she the strict machine? Is she in love with a strict machine? Is she in love with herself? The video raises more questions than it answers.

Kylie Minogue – Come Into My World. Kylie sings with herself sings with herself sings with herself. How does she keep track of everything? And why does she have three shirts from the dry cleaners?

Fergie – Clumsy. Fergie lives in a pop-up book. Doesn’t everyone?

Roisin Murphy – Sow Into You. Roisin took a wrong turn into Project Runway’s “avant-garde” challenge and look what happened to her wardrobe…

Madonna and Justin Timberlake – Four Minutes. Madge and JT flee from something that is eating the world. Will they survive?

Tiga – (Far From) Home. Tiga copes with writer’s block, with the help of birds and other things.

Persephone’s Bees – Nice Day. So, one day, Angelina Moysova was walking along and noticed what a nice day it was. And then, bears!

Honorable Mention — Madonna – Get Together. Madonna lives in a solarized world stuck on fuschia, with break dancers and swirling planets. She seems to know how to get around, though.
