QOTD: Life-Changing Decisions

treesIn college, I was a student government dork. I was active in residence hall leadership, then moved on to campus-wide elections and activism. I passed out flyers, I registered people to vote, I campaigned door-to-door. Eventually, I found myself in a position where the next logical step was to run for student body president.

The last two or three student body presidents had been recruited to work at a VERY large, multi-national corporation. The people who held the position before that moved on to study at fairly prestigious law schools. Your law school application always looks better when it includes recommendation letters from presidents of Big 10 universities.

I ended up not running for the position. I don’t regret the decision but I recognize that I probably changed the course of my life fairly drastically in not pursuing the opportunity. After graduation, I would likely have gotten a job in management or gone to school somewhere completely different than where I ended up. I would be living somewhere else, working in a totally different industry. My entire history would be different.

Do you have a life-changing decision that you made? Did you recognize it as such when you made it? Do you think it was the right decision for you?
