The Five Richest Cities in America

The number crunchers at the Wall Street Journal have dug through the data and come up with the five riches cities in America. But first a few definitions of “rich” and “city” because details matter.

Rich is determined by median annual household income. It’s not accumulated wealth and having a few big shots at the top to skew the average doesn’t matter here. City is defined as a metropolitan statistical area. These are standardized areas that are the common basis for studies like this.

For comparison the US median household income is $51,017.

  1. San Jose, CA – $90,737
  2. Washington, DC – $88,233
  3. Bridgeport, CT – $79,841
  4. San Francisco, CA – $74,922
  5. Boston, MA – $71,738
