The number crunchers at the Wall Street Journal have dug through the data and come up with the five riches cities in America. But first a few definitions of “rich” and “city” because details matter.
Rich is determined by median annual household income. It’s not accumulated wealth and having a few big shots at the top to skew the average doesn’t matter here. City is defined as a metropolitan statistical area. These are standardized areas that are the common basis for studies like this.
For comparison the US median household income is $51,017.
- San Jose, CA – $90,737
- Washington, DC – $88,233
- Bridgeport, CT – $79,841
- San Francisco, CA – $74,922
- Boston, MA – $71,738
