This is the Beginning: RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 5, Episode 12

Commence shake down. The final three competed last night, and you know what that means: it’s time to make a video for a RuPaul track!

This go-round, the queens were tasked with filming a video for the anthemic track “The Beginning.” It involved a court room scene where each queen took turns playing prosecutor, defendant and witness. Predictably, Roxxxy couldn’t handle it because it involved acting and being funny. What does Roxxxy do when she’s having a hard time with something? Yes, that’s right, she’s cruel to Jinkx, and then Roxxxy feels better, and we hate her even more. Jinkx and Alaska were very funny, but what was my favorite part of the court room scenes? Yeah, you know it.

Also, I was clearly not the only person searching for this after the episode aired — YouTube suggested it automatically. Srsly, I’m going to need an MP3 of it for mah phone.

Anywhore. During the dance sequence of the video, Alaska struggled with the chiffonography and hairography, while Roxxxy excelled at such pageantry. Jinkx seemed to do okay, but at times the editing cut her out completely, showing us only Roxxxy and Alaska, the high and low extremes. I suspect it’s because Jinkx was doing fairly well. Jinkx owned the scenes shot in the car, her comedy chops proving once again she has what it takes to shine. The queens also got to feast on a Tic Tac with Ru and have a private meeting with Gloria Allred. Did you gasp when Boxxxy Mandrews cut off Ms. Allred and snapped at her? I did. Dang. You just don’t do that.

The queens had to defend their lives, and while Roxxxy gave a fake pageanty speech, and Jinkx spoke from her heart, Alaska fucking ripped the competition to shreds and gave the kind of killer speech America’s Next Drag Superstar should give. Have I made a grave error in assuming that Jinkx would easily coast to victory? Could it actually be Alaska?? I’ll be happy with either queen because they have both proved themselves to possess the necessary qualities: Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent. How crazy would it be if Sharon and Alaska were back-to-back winners?

Let’s take a final look at the Index, shall we? (Well it might actually pop up one last time for a trip down Season Five Mammary Lane, but then again who even knows? Not me.)

The Index remains unchanged. Boxxxy is still on the bottom where she belongs. I think Jinkx is still the favorite to win, but the gap between her and Alaska is almost non-existent. I can easily imagine a scenario where Alaska takes the crown, but I am sticking to my guns and keeping Jinkx as my prediction for America’s Next Drag Superstar. She’s been at the top of the Index eight times this season, and even though it’s an even playing field in terms of each queen having won two challenges, I think Jinkx was top tier more than she was bottom. What did you think? What are your predictions? Sound off in the comments, hunties!

One final note: if you haven’t been following Alex Hanna’s Drag Race posts on Bad Hessian, you rilly should. Check out his post predicting the winner here and then work backwards.
