Today is Another Holiday: Public Domain Day

Public Domain Day is the first day of the year, every year. In Europe, Jan 1, 2013 is the day when hundreds of works are entering the public domain. Works including Grant Wood’s European Gothic, works by Edith Stein, Bruno Schulz and Franz Boas. Now, in the EU citizens can copy, share, or incorporate these works into digital archives at libraries, public or private. Artists can make versions of “European Gothic,” without asking permission or violating the law.  Continue reading

Super Squats Challenge – Flipping the Scale

As many people do upon entering a new year, I was reflecting on the past year and some of the significant changes I made concerning my health. Things on January 1, 2012, were not at all where I wanted to be: I was the heaviest I had ever been in my life, I was abnormally inactive, and I was overindulging with food and drink. When I got sick in December 2011, my doctor of 10 years handed me a printout about how to lose weight. I was mortified. I had to do something differently or I was going to be facing some serious consequences. Continue reading

QOTD: How Do You Feel About Having Guests?

pN1HPThe holidays are nearly over. Some of you are thinking “thank god”, others are sad to see them end. For many of us, having guests (or being a guest) was involved.

In theory, it sounds great. For the host – a house full of people who are happy to see each other, dinners full of laughter and chit-chat.  Off all day sight-seeing and having memorable experiences. For the guest – seeing someone you haven’t spent time with in ages, new places to go, long, tipsy talks into the night.

In reality – maybe not exactly the way it looked in the preview. I feel very ambivalent about guests, either having or being.  Continue reading
