Crasseroles: I Actually Made the Dorito Taco Bake From ‘Horrible Pinterest Recipes’

Welcome to Crasseroles, kids! We have so many high end recipes that I thought we should delve into the world of cream of mushroom soup and Velveeta cheese. Hey, sometimes, you’re just craving something that’ll stick to your ribs.

This recipe came from of our own Cunning_Linguist’s “Horrible Pinterest Recipes.” Having browsed the recipes, I noticed some of them seemed theoretically good, in a Sandra Lee sort of way, but had some horrible photography, or an overuse of Velveeta cheese product, and some of them just made me want to run away screaming. So, using some of these recipes, and in the spirit of Dining with the Duggars, I thought it might be a good time to experiment with various casserole recipes! Join in the fun!

Today’s recipe came courtesy of Two Maids a Milking’s Taco Bake. The tag line is “If you like crescent rolls, sour cream, and DORITOS – then this is the recipe for you!” I like all three of those but the idea of putting them all together just seems weird, so I wanted to give this a shot. Plus, everyone who left a comment raved about it, even though the pictures were a little home school. Not like I have any room to comment.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. hamburger
  • 1 pkg. taco seasoning  (I just used chili powder, cumin, salt and pepper)
  • 8 oz. sour cream
  • 1 pkg. crescent rolls (8)
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 1 can diced tomatoes (optional)
  • 1 c. shredded cheese
  • 1 large bag of Doritos tortilla chips

Directions:

1)      Brown the meat. Because I believe onions belong in everything, I diced an onion and sautéed that with some garlic first, and then added the meat. Maybe I’m just a risk taker, who knows?

2)      Add the taco seasoning, the tomatoes and sauce, some water and let it simmer for a bit.

3)      Roll out and press the crescent rolls in a 9 x 13 pan to form the base. Optional step: Bake JUST the crust at 350 for ten minutes if you’re concerned about soggy bottoms. Some people are, and some people just don’t care. Personally, I pre-baked and thought it was fine.

4)      Layer the taco stuff, sour cream and cheese. Just one layer each. Don’t go getting crazy on me!

5)      Crush ¾ of a bag of Doritos and sprinkle on top. Bake for 30-35 minutes. *optional step, bake sans Doritos layer for 15-20, and THEN add the Doritos for the last 10-15. This is what I did.

Scoring:

Difficulty: 1 out of 5 Julias – This couldn’t be easier. The most difficult part is my addition of onions.

Prep Time: 1 out of 5 Altons – Pretty simple. I think I took an hour at most and 45 minutes of that was baking.

Taste: 2 out of 5 Anthonys – This didn’t completely blow chunks. The biggest problem is the crescent roll base.

Salvageability: 1 out of 5 Inas – Can’t really be fixed. The problems are the crescent roll base and the Dorito layer. Remove the crescent roll base and you’re left with a Doritos Loco Taco that got crushed. Remove the Doritos and it’s just a taco salad minus the lettuce and guacamole.
