Doctor Who Gets a New Companion

The cast of Doctor Who will be changing as Karen Gillan (who has played current companion Amy Pond since the beginning of season five) is departing during the next season. Today it was announced that Jenna-Louise Coleman would be joining the show as the new companion.

Coleman, known previously to British audiences for her role on ITV soap opera Emmerdale, also had a small role in last year’s Captain America: The First Avenger.

Gillan and co-star Arthur Darvill (who plays Amy Pond’s husband Rory) will be leaving in the fifth episode of the upcoming season, according to head writer Stephen Moffat (mild to moderate spoilers as to what will precede their departure at the link). Coleman will make her first appearance on Who during the annual Christmas special. Season seven is set to premiere on BBC and BBC America this fall.
