A bevy of websites are reporting this morning that ‘super-patriot’ Andrew Breitbart has passed away of natural causes overnight. Business Insider notes that, among others, Drudge, HuffPo, The Daily Caller and Breitbart’s own websites are carrying the news that the conservative author and site-runner has passed.
Certainly, there will be more to come of this story in the coming hours and days, as Breitbart was a hero to some on the far right, a villain to those on the left, and the guy who helped make this little clown famous. The list of Breitbat’s offenses against a decent and balanced society are almost too numerous to note here, though the name Shirley Sherrod springs to mind almost immediately.
Despite that, it almost always seems wrong to root for the untimely death of another individual, or to celebrate it when it happens. It’s certainly possible to hold the hope and belief that someone’s absence from the political scene will possibly take some of the edge off the toxic rhetoric that’s plagued our society for the past few decades without dancing on the man’s grave.
