Saturday Night DJ Party: Early 80s Dance Music

Oliver Cheatham – Get Down Saturday Night (1983)

Tonight we’re getting down to some disco-funk from the early 80s. I was only like five when most of these songs came out but I’ve been diggin’ in the crates to bring you some tasty choons. By 1981, most of the typical 70s disco sounds were out of style. Gone were the strings and harps and cow bells and breathy vocals. The AIDS and Crack War era saw disco move toward synths and new drum machine sounds. Also handclaps, lots and lots of handclaps on the downbeat.

Feel free to post your own choons, but fair warning… I might ban you if you post any of the following wack-ass or just plain way-too-obvious shit:

Abba
The Village People
Michael Jackson
The Bee Gees
Prince
and of course Elvis (this rule is always in effect)

Eleanor Grant – Loving Your Good Thing Away (1984)

Affinity – Don’t Go Away (1983)

Aurra – Such a Feeling (1982)

Imagination – Changes (1982)

Chaka Khan – Fate (1981)
This tune was famously sampled by Stardust’s “Music Sounds Better With You.”

Cloud – Steppin’ Out (1983)

Elektrik Dred – Butter Up (1983)

Fonda Rae – Over Like a Fat Rat (1982)

Grace Jones – Pull Up to the Bumper (1981)

Gwen Guthrie – Seventh Heaven (Larry Levan Mix) (1983)

Change – Angel in my Pocket (1980)

Yazoo – Situation (Joey Negro re-edit) (1983)

Unlimited Touch – I Hear Music in the Streets (1983)
