Thursday News Roundup: Domestic Dispute Edition

It’s been a hell of a week so far Crasstalk, and it is only going to get more interesting. Since America is the only country that matters, let’s keep it on the home front today. Warning: Reading today’s news may result in a restraining order, try to at least have your shirt on when the police arrive.

Surprise! The House manages to defeat a budget bill that would have funded federal government  operations after September 30th. The bill was defeated when many Republicans broke party ranks to support a more conservative, tea party position on new spending. It’s almost enough to make you feel a little sorry for John Boehner. Almost.

Troy Davis was executed at 11:05 EST last night. Davis was convicted of killing a Savannah police officer in 1989. The confession of another man in the murder as well as several recanting witnesses lead many to believe that Davis was innocent. Meanwhile, Texas executed Lawrence Russell Brewer, a white supremacist who was convicted in the horrific dragging death of James Byrd Jr. in 1997. Life sure seems cheap in America all the way around.

Pat Boone is even crazier than you suspected. In an interview with the San Fransisco Chronicle Boone said he believed that Barack Obama’s birth certificate is a fake. Boone insists that people he met in Kenya told him that the president was born there. He added that Obama is not really a Christian to complete his 2008 whack-job retrospective.

Financial markets are dropping as the Fed’s economic stimulus plan is released. The plan, dubbed Operation Twist involves the Fed selling of short-term bonds and using the money to buy long-term bond in an effort to raise the value of long-term bonds. It is hoped that this will stimulate borrowing and investing. Here is an explanation of what the Fed is trying to do.

Sweet Raptor Jesus, that was depressing. Let’s try and ignore the fact that a Jerry Springer stage brawl may be the best metaphor for this country right now. Try not to sob at your desk; at least the Europeans know how we feel.
