The Dumbest Thing I’ve Ever Done

This is a true story. Once upon a time, I bought my first condominium. On moving day, when I drove the rented U-Haul with a raised top into the condo parking lot, I knocked a balcony off the side of the building. THANK GOD no one was hurt. I soon learned that I filled out the forms correctly and unintentionally purchased accident insurance. So, the total cost of the accident for me was under $100. However, everyone in my new building knew who I was.

Since there were a whole bunch of witnesses, I got stuck telling that story to a lot of people. Everyone laughed at me, which I pretty much expected. People would ask “How on earth did you do something that stupid?” I didn’t have a good answer for that question. It all happened so fast. So my response was “Haven’t you ever done something really stupid with no good excuse?” (I’m convinced this is the explanation for many, many children).

I heard some great stories that certainly made me feel less stupid. One woman sank her husband’s new truck in a lake. A guy I knew went through a car wash with a $2000 mountain bike strapped on top of the car. Someone else drove through a construction zone and ripped out the transmission in her car. So, I’ve confessed. What really, really stupid thing did you do? If you don’t have a story, it means that you just haven’t done it yet; it’s waiting in your future.
