If You Cannot Be an Athlete, Be an Athletic Supporter

What is the deal with Texas and cheerleading controversies?

First there was Wanda Holloway who hired a hit man to kill the mother of her daughter’s cheerleading rival.  Who the eff has a cheerleading rival?  I cannot fathom what that could possible mean.

Then there was a Silsbee, Texas cheerleader who refused to cheer for an athlete who was indicted of raping her.  The superintendent, his assistant and school principal told the cheerleader that if she didn’t cheer for the alleged rapist, she had to go home.  Can you imagine?

Now we have former Carrollton, TX Creekview High cheerleader Sami Sanches  (Note: I suspect she dots her “i” with a heart). Sami and another cheerleader had a feud over a boy.  Apparently Sami  kissed the other cheerleader’s ex-boyfriend and instead of a proper cat fight happening, Sami was ousted from cheerleading “team” the following year.  The family sued for a civil rights violation and claimed a school-wide conspiracy.  The case was thrown out of a federal appeals court.  Also of note in this case is the attorney for Sanches, who was chastised by the court for poor grammar, misspellings and poor subject/verb agreement.  Deadspin’s article on the dressing down of this attorney is noteworthy.

For some other giggles on the subject, check out Texas Cheerleading Magazine which has the tagline: Cheerleading, It’s a Texas Thing!  Indeed.

Not ever being a cheerleader, I’m not sure if this really is a “Texas Thing” or is this wackiness widespread?  In my hometown, cheerleaders were benign little twits, so I am a bit jaded.

So what was your high school cheerleading culture like?  Big hair and lawsuits like Texas, or something more boring and tame?
