Saturday Crass Cartoons

Happy Saturday everybody. It’s time for our weekend cartoons. This week I thought we would get a little prime time action.

This is a fantastic series that ran on the WB for only one short season. It can still be seen on reruns on Adult Swim and TBS. The Oblongs, created by Angus Oblong and Jace Richdale, originally aired between 2001 and 2002. It has the fantastic voice talent of Will Ferrell and Jean Smart, as well as well as Jason and Randy Sklar (who also did this great show).

The series follows the adventures of a family that lives in a toxic waste dump. Our main hero is Milo, a sweet, smart kid trying to fit into a world of family dysfunction and spoiled rich classmates. Milo and his equally deformed friends face the daily sting of unpopularity and poverty with a sharp sense of gallows humor.

However, even though the Oblongs contains the bite of social inequalities it is ultimately a sweet story. The harshness of Milo’s circumstances are met with loyalty and kindness. The Oblongs love each other no matter what their hardships, and that gives the series a warmth even though the jokes are often dark. Here are a couple of clips to get you started.
