Monday Night Open Thread

Well hello gang. Thanks for sticking with us today. I am going to repost this from The Beloved Leader’s message last night:

Dear Crasstalk Nation,

As Crasstalk has grown in popularity and the level of engagement you guys have with the site has grown, so have our costs associated with running this place. Currently we’re making a series of huge improvements that will make the site better than ever.

You can help us out. If you love Crasstalk as much as we do, please consider making a donation to our site fund. Our Paypal address is [email protected]. We’re not asking for much, and any amount of money helps!

In the meantime, Bens, Dogs, GrandInquisitor and I are working hard on a series of major improvements to the site.

OK, now here’s some fun stuff to watch to get your evening started.

Guilty Pleasures: Movie Edition

Well since we seem to be having some technical difficulties, we are going to have to find a way to entertain ourselves tonight. I want to thank everyone for being so patient about everything. It is much appreciated. So since we don’t have the normal posts to read, let’s indulge in some classic Crasstalk overshare.

Tonight show us your most embarrassing cinematic indulgence. What’s the terrible movie you can’t turn off when it is on TNT and no one else is around. Here is the most cringe-inducing choice I can come up with.

This movie is on SyFy at least once every few months and I watch it every time. It involves both sex with a computer and Parker Stevenson. What could go wrong?

Anyway, buck up and give us your shame.

What was the first mobile device you owned?

Cellphones are ubiquitous now, but back in the day remember how big of a deal it was to own one? In 2nd grade I carpooled with the son of a big-shot Hollywood producer, and this guy had a cellular telephone! Everyone was impressed. It was the size of a briefcase and had a padded carrying strap, the damn thing weighed about 30 lbs. It was something like $2.99 a minute and the horrible microphone made it sound like a toilet was continually flushing behind you. The one time that we really did need to use the phone (flat tire on the freeway) the battery was dead. Oops. I guess you had to charge that sucker 12 hours a night, otherwise it wouldn’t work. The raddest thing about the phone though was that the guy would brag about the phone and his line was: “Yeah, so I decided to pay the extra $500 and get the touch-tone model. No biggie. Its a no-brainer!” Meaning that the other (cheaper) option was a rotary-dial briefcase cellphone!!

So what was your first “mobile” device?

Monday Daytime Open Thread

Good morning, Crasstalkers. You’re probably sitting at your desk right now, ready to waste most of your workday with Crasstalkin’. And then you find the place in complete disarray.

We’re sorry! We’re working on a bunch of improvements that will make the site much, much better and hopefully fix some of the problems you’ve all been having. The site should return to normal within the next day or two.

In the meantime, stay breezy.

Dear Crasstalk Nation,

In the meantime, Bens, Dogs, GrandInquisitor and I are working hard on a series of major improvements to the site.

  • We’re upgrading our dedicated server to make the site perform faster and smoother.
  • We’re making major changes to our database to (hopefully) fix a major bug that caused commenters to be randomly locked out of commenting on certain threads.
  • We’re developing a solution to provide chat directly on Crasstalk.com.
  • We’re making database changes to allow authors to upload much bigger files than they previously could.
  • We’re working on a solution that would allow authors to share music with their fellow Crasstalkers via streaming technology.
  • We’re making minor design changes to make site cleaner looking and easier to navigate.
  • We’re making changes to the site’s database so that old articles and comments don’t slow down the overall CT experience.
  • We’re making a number of changes to our SEO to ensure that Crasstalk is more visible on search engines and we can continue growing new readers for our talented group of writers.
  • We’re working hard on ways of making sure the actual articles get better and better.
  • We’re exploring new features to offer you guys such as Crasstalk.com email addresses and a Crasstalk.com-affiliated blog service.

Crasstalk got drunk last night and needs some time to recuperate

Hey Crasstalkers,

Bens, GrandInquisitor, DogsOfWar and I are busy working on fixing many of the lingering problems we’ve been having with IntenseDebate. We’re making a bunch of fixes to our database and website so that it peforms better than ever.

Unfortunately, this will take at least a day or two. In the meantime, we set up a basic blog here for you to post comments on.

When the site comes back, everything will return to normal and you will be able to post comments using your IntenseDebate profile.

Also, authors: Sorry but until the normal site is back up, you won’t be able to post new articles.

We luv ya.
