Darby is a beautiful western town located in southwestern Montana on the Continental Divide near the Montana/Idaho border. Founded in 1888, Darby began as a mining and trapping town, but current industries are logging, agriculture, and cattle ranching. With a population around 720, Darby is the antithesis of bustle. Last week, Smithsonian.com released their list of “The 20 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2014.” My personal favorite, Bandon, Oregon, did not make the list. Police logs in small town newspapers are usually pretty amusing, but by far the best I’ve encountered is in The East Hampton Star. The Star is an old, family-run newspaper that’s got a mix of stories covering small town Hamptons life, such as it is, as well as more worldly concerns. Whenever I’ve been able to spend time in the area, the first thing I do is pick up a copy of the Star, make a giant pitcher of gin & Frescas, and dive into the local police logs. Continue reading
