A Ten Year Game of Civilization II

A post was made to Reddit a few days ago which detailed one commenter’s ten year game of Civilization II. This quickly went viral, as it depicted a fascinating dystopian future where war has been the norm for 1700 years, the polar ice caps have melted multiple times, the vast majority of the world is completely uninhabitable.

Back in the heady days of my adolescence, no game consumed quite as much time as Civilization II did. It was every teenage nerd’s dream: a chance to conquer and rule the world. I always played as the Americans, and either won through military conquest or reaching Alpha Centauri first.

However, there would be occasions where I would find myself in a game not unlike this one, locked in a stalemate with rival superpowers. It would usually take some kind of breakthrough, either in government or technology, to break the stalemate.

In this case, none of that can happen. The game takes place in 3991. A community has sprung up around the post, spawning it’s own subreddit, as well as getting back to the game’s creator, gaming legend Sid Meier. They’re calling it The Endless War.

There is more than a little irony in that the player, Lycerius, had to switch from Democracy to Communism because it was harming his empire, and is now being pressed to change to Fundamentalism, to crush internal dissent.

For those of you interested in the original post and back story, here it is.
