The Germans Love “Shitstorm,” And We Should Be Proud

I bet you don’t have the slightest idea how much you’ve helped the Germans this past year. And all you had to do was sit at your computer and fight with the internet.

Up until now, the Germans have suffered due to a lack of an acceptable term for what happens when two or more of us vehemently disagree online. Then somewhere, somehow “shitstorm” appeared, and Germany smiled.

They love shitstorm so much that they’ve named it their “Anglicism of the Year.” According to the website, everybody hates English loanwords, except the Germans, who give each new word an opportunity to provide proof of its usefulness to the community. And shitstorm filled the void that was left between scheiße (shit) and kritic (critic).

I’m not sure where shitstorm got its start, but I’m confident we can pat ourselves on the back for advancing its global importance. No one has brand-new vocabulary building skills like Crassholes.

I hereby open nominations for next year.
