Our First Ever Crasstalk Recipe Contest Update

Hi kids. I wanted to post an update on yesterday’s post since many of you had very good questions that were answered in the comments, making them hard to find. So, I’ll resummarize things here:

We are setting a budget of $10.00 to make a meal for two. That would be for us Australians, Canadians and USers. UKers, please use 8£. The meal should include an entrée and either an appetizer or a dessert. We’ve made the drink optional. If it is included, you can earn bonus points! So in that spirit, your drink can be anything but tap water!

We’ve taken into account basic staples that one may have laying around and Launie has graciously provided a chart to help give a guide to pricing:

Oil –  free

Salt & pepper –  free

Flour  – 25¢, 1 cup

Butter  – 40¢, a stick

Potatoes – 25¢ each

Onions – 25¢ each

Rice – 10¢, a cup

Pasta – 10¢, a cup

Fresh garlic – 25¢, a head

“Fancy” grains and pastas:
quinoa, couscous, pearl couscous etc. – 15¢, a cup

Dried herbs:
basil, oregano, bay leaves – free

Dried spices:
garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, paprika – free

“Fancy” herbs and spices:
smoked paprika, fennel seed, coriander etc. – 5¢ per teaspoon

chicken, vegetable stock – 25¢ a cup

Now, many of you have asked very good questions about including various items like turtles, wine and the like. I’d use market and retail pricing for things like that. If you’re really unsure of your item, take the price of the item, divide a serving size into it, and figure out how many servings you have used. We aren’t going to be too scientific about it because the goal of the contest is to have fun and be creative!

There was a deadline of Sunday, 12 midnight PST, which (incorrectly) to my mind is at the end of the day on Sunday. It has been pointed out that this timing may be a little tight. So, let’s extend the deadline to Tuesday, Sept. 27th, 11:59pm PST. For our Aussie friends, because the time difference is so extreme, let’s make a deadline of Wednesday 11:59pm. (You all are 17 hrs ahead of PST, so I am rounding up to midnight the next day.)

So that’s it! I believe this is striking a fair balance between everyone. Now, go and be inspired! I’m so looking forward for new ideas on what to make!

Note: When you post your items, please post them in the original contest post.  Also, please make sure you post your recipes and the cost. Thanks!
