Book Review: My Boyfriend Wrote a Book About Me

Hilary Winston, a writer for the show Community, finally gets her revenge. For a while, she kept it all inside waiting and biding her time, hoping to release the proverbial Kracken on her ex-boyfriend and finally the time has come.

It all started when two writers were in love. They shared baths, hopes, dreams, and cats. (Oh yes, there are cats!) Yet, sadly, the romance fizzles as romances often do. A break-up followed, complete with the usual histrionics…until Winston found a book. The book was fiction and written by her ex. It was fiction, but the first sentence referred to a fat-assed girlfriend that took classes at the Groundlings. This wasn’t fiction! It was her! Although her ass isn’t particularly fat, everything about this character and her interactions with the boyfriend’s character were real conversations that had taken place between them. He talked about embarrassing things that she did and his utterly unflattering post-coital thoughts. Needless to say, Winston was floored. So what better way to get back at an ex for writing this “fiction” than to write a non-fiction humorous book about him and his white ball hair, among other things?

Now, this was not some unwarranted revenge to make up for some imaginary wrong. No, this was more than warranted. It was pretty much an ordained mission from a higher power and the first wave of the counter-attack has commenced. Yes, just the first wave. You see, the book has already been adapted into a screenplay and is being produced by Lorne Michaels, himself. This is only the beginning.

Yet, this book isn’t just about that one relationship as the full title shows, My Boyfriend Wrote a Book about Me: And Other Stories I Shouldn’t Share with Acquaintances, Coworkers, Taxi drivers, Assistants, Job Interviewers, Bikini Waxers, and Ex/Current/Future Boyfriends but Have. It’s about many of  her past boyfriends and shows her humorous take on her life up until this point. It runs the full gamut of emotion, Winston will make you laugh out loud and  maybe even shed a few tears
