British ‘Spy Rock’ Actually a True Story

Back in 2006, Russian state-run TV aired accusations against the UK that sounded like they were stolen from “Get Smart”. According to the Russians, the Brits planted a “spy rock” filled with electronic gadgetry in a Moscow park. They broadcast pictures and X-Rays of the allegedly captured “spy rock” and grainy surveillance footage showing alleged British agents interacting with the rock. Continue reading

Microsoft Gives Audience the Bird, Unveils “Tweet Choir” in Last Ever CES keynote

CES, the Consumer Electronics Show held each January in Las Vegas, is known for two things:

1. Being the first look at the new gadget technology we can expect to see in the year ahead.

2. It’s invariably across the road from the annual porn industry convention held in Las Vegas at the same time. Continue reading

V-12 Engine in the Palm of Your Hand

Alright guys, I know this is long, but check it out.  It is one of the smallest working engines I’ve seen completely built from scratch in this guy’s time off from work.

I swear to you that when it starts running off of the compressed air towards the end I squealed like a 12 year old girl at a Justin Beiber concert.  Maybe not a first, or even an insane breakthrough, but the fact that someone put this much time and effort into precision machining and designing this thing deserves some serious props. DRM Only Hurts Legitimate Paying Customers

I’m sure most people are familiar with the ubiquitous set top box lounging around or near their television eating around 19 volts and putting off quite a bit of heat. Most people probably figure these are just part of the package with having cable service. A necessity that we’ve all come to terms with. Well not me. I stood up and challenged the system. I wanted something better for my house. Will no one rid me of these turbulent devices? Continue reading

Yahoo Fires CEO by Telephone, CEO Fires Back

Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz was fired yesterday afternoon by Yahoo’s board. Apparently not wanting to deal with her in person, they did it by telephone. They did not think to have her company email privileges disabled first. It is a credit to Ms Bartz that her retaliation was relatively- relatively– low key. She immediately sent an email to the mailing list for all Yahoo staff worldwide, as follows after the jump: Continue reading

Finally An Affordable Tablet

If you were waiting for an affordable tablet to hit the market in the US, this may be your time. Acer’s new Iconia Tab A100 is now on sale and starting price is $330 (or slightly more from Amazon. Front and rear-facing camera’s, dual core processor, microSD and micro USB 2.0 and a usable display at 1024×600 make this the first tablet I’ve considering purchasing since the iPad2 sold out while I was still standing in line.

What is Spotify?

Free. Legal. On Demand.

Remember a long, long time ago when if you wanted a song from a band or singer you had to buy the whole album? Then Napster came along and you didn’t have to. Well, legally anyways. (Even though I know you’re all upstanding citizens and would never consider illegally downloading music.) Then iTunes came out and you didn’t have to buy the whole album if you didn’t want to, but you had to buy the single before being able to listen to the whole thing. And then Pandora came out and you could tell it what you liked and it would play similar music, but you couldn’t tell it what song you wanted to listen to, you just had to hope that it got played while you were listening to a station? Happy Systems Administrator Day

It’s often a thankless job and I can tell you that honestly since I am an Systems Administrator myself. I often tell people that “If all goes well people never know I was even here.” This is very true. The thing is that most complex systems have a way of breaking down. Call it job security, or call it poor planning, or blame the shitty architecture decisions but the reality is that most computer systems will always require gentle care and feeding. Enter the world of the Systems Administrator. Continue reading

Apple Mac OS X 10.7 Early Review

NOTE:  I am not some computer genius.  I’m a guy who surfs the net a lot and tries to fix his computer himself.  I know a bit more than my parents about computers, but
I am in no way Tim Berners-Lee.

Thanks to the fine folks over at Demonoid, I grabbed a copy of 0x 7 yesterday and installed it on my laptop.

First things first:  You can only run this if you have a Core 2 Duo or i5 or i7.  Don’t think your old G4 Cube can handle this operating system.  Also, Core Duos, sorry, you’re out.  You guys are the new Power PC.  Second, there’s no installation DVD.  You download and launch the .dmg and everything else is taken care of for you.  This was especially welcome to me, because my DVD drive broke after I dropped my laptop.  Just double click the .dmg, and let it sit for around 45 minutes (my black MacBook – 2.2 Ghz core 2 duo – told me it would take 30 minutes, but that bastard lied to me) and then you’ll be done.
