Mad Men Post-Mortem: At the Codfish Ball

Let’s talk about last night’s episode and share our thoughts, links to excellent recaps, and (of course) hilarious gifs! A few of my own thoughts after the cut.

WARNING: THE POST AND COMMENTS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS. DO NOT ENTER IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE SPOILED. THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING, JERK.

Just a few scattered notes today, sorry.

  • Sally Draper’s go-go boots! Our little Sally is growing up, eh? Especially now that she’s experienced her first oh-god-I’ve-just-wandered-in-on-sex moment. I thought it was hilarious the way she described the city to Glenn as “dirty.”
  • Speaking of which, ughhh Glenn. I should have known that Weiner wouldn’t stop putting his creepy son in the damn show.
  • The “dream” that Megan’s Communist professor dad refers to her giving up–is that acting? Or something else entirely?
  • Megan’s parent’s relationship could certainly use some unpacking. Many people have said that Megan is surprisingly adult about her relationship with Don (save for her running off in last week’s episode), but I don’t think I agree. I think she is cynical and shrewd, but not necessarily adult.
  • Speaking of Megan’s parents, yikes! Megan’s mom! Someone is a little bitter about her life choices (and possibly about growing older). A blow job is certainly an interesting choice, as far as cheating goes. Personally I’d go for the whole shebang (pun totally intended).
  • And I had no idea that Julia Ormond could speak French, and so beautifully at that. How ’bout that.
  • Roger knocked it out of the park this week. There is something incredibly charming about a man that can make kids feel like they’re being treated like adults. His scene with Mona was my favorite in the entire episode, I think.
  • I am really enjoying Peggy and Joan’s flowering relationship. It seems that Joan is a lot less old-fashioned than she used to be. Either her divorce has jaded her or opened her up to new ways of thinking. Maybe we’ll see a surprising feminist turn from Joan (goodness knows the congratulations she gave to Peggy on deciding to move in with Abe was not quite what we could have expected from our notion of Joan).

What did you guys think? Share your thoughts, recaps, gifs, whatever!
