MET Gala 2014 Open Thread

The theme for this year’s MET Gala was Charles James: Beyond Fashion, basically white tie and couture. Who did you think was the best and worst dressed?

Couple of thoughts (alas, couldn’t find publishable pictures):

  • It seemed like most people didn’t get the theme.
  • I wasn’t a fan of the sheer or sheer-ish trend (see Beyonce, Kristen Stewart, rising starlet Kate Upton).
  • My pick for best dressed is Benedict Cumberbatch.
  • Luptia Nyong’o’s dress: I get that she was going for a look that was a cross between Josephine Baker and a 1920s flapper. It’s something you can see in a scene from The Great Gatsby. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work for me, especially given this year’s theme.
  • Can’t unsee Lainey’s description of Johnny Depp looking like Mr. Peanut.
