Based on some of your Photo Phriday pics with rumpled clothes strewn about all willy nilly, many of you may not be familiar with the clothes hanger, let alone its history. I’m here to help you.
Historians believe that the forerunner to the clothes-hanger was first invented by O. A. North in 1869 in the form of a patented coat hook. Albert J. Parkhouse, an employee for the Timberlake and Novelty Company in Jackson, Michigan, invented the shoulder-shaped wire hanger in 1903 in response to co-workers’ complaints of too few available coat hooks. Other clothes-hangers have been credited to Thomas Jefferson (wooden-based) and Schuyler C. Hulett (added cardboard tubes to minimize wrinkles). A total of 189 patents were granted between 1900 and 1906 on different versions of garment-hangers.
Other known uses?
Apparently for roasting marshmallows because finding a branch during a camp-out seems too difficult. Or for self-induced abortions when misogynists treat women like property.
