Mad Men Post Mortem: The Better Half

mm609-ted-560After a complete mindf*ck of an episode last week, we’re just back to the usual f*ckery around SCDPCGC.

WARNING: All spoilers ahead.

  • First – we still don’t have a name for this place. Seriously? All those writers and still no name? Who are we kidding here? I wonder if this is something we won’t see until the season finale.
  • Everyone wants Betty. It was all I could do to not just yell “NNOOOO!!!!!” when her and Don were hooking up. She’s a smart lady and she knew exactly what she was doing, but who took Betty as the cheating type? Should it really surprise anyone that Henry would be turned on by one of his colleagues hitting on Betty? Bits was a beauty when Henry met her, but then she got fat and dyed her hair dark. (Which we thought was maybe a sign of a darker Betty to come, but oh look, she’s blonde again.) Someone else thinks Betty is hot, but Henry’s the one that gets to take her home.
  • DUCK! It’s a surprise to see him peek his head in for this episode. Apparently Harry Crane uses Duck to stroke his ego and Pete (as always it seems) is really terrified about losing his job. Does anyone suppose that anyone at SCDPCGC would really stop Harry if he wanted to jump ship? Is there any reason for anyone there to show loyalty to Harry?
  • God, Pete’s receding hairline gets crazier each week.
  • Am I a terrible person for not hating the Peggy/Ted relationship possibility? Of course he FREAKS out at her touching his and because he’s thinking about it and overly sensitive about the whole thing. I don’t know if Peggy made a wise move telling Ted that Abe was stabbed and that their relationship was over in one fell swoop. The whole thing is probably not going anywhere so oh well.
  • How out of character for Don to drive up to Bobby’s camp for the night. Does he really feel bad about his kids not knowing him enough to know that they would think a black woman raised him? Will he continue to cheat on Megan? Or will he really turn it around and focus on their relationship?
  • What the hell with Megan’s boss’ wife hitting on her? I mean, I guess after the swingers offer in the first episode, I shouldn’t be too surprised.
  • Joanie and Bob Bun Benson! Looks like he was able to hook someone with his two coffee gag after all.
  • And last but not least, we finally get to see the end of Abe and Peggy. I hate that he calls Peggy a coward. He’s right – not everyone is meant to be a pioneer of a new neighborhood, but he knew her apprehensions when she started looking. I can’t blame her for wanting to buy an apartment in safe neighborhood where she won’t have to worry about being stabbed or having a rock thrown in her window. HVDH make her the enemy when she was just trying to please him. If it was me in Peggy’s situation, I probably would have shoved that knife further in his gut.

Alright – that’s all I’ve got for now. What are your thoughts on the episode? Don’t forget to share links to your favorite recaps, power rankings and other insights to the show!
