The Hell Are They Wearing? 2012 Primetime Emmy Awards

Last night, stars of the small screen (and Nicole Kidman) lit up the red carpet to celebrate themselves and promote their new projects. There were plenty of fashion risk-takers by both men and women, so let’s get right to it.

Starting with the men for a change, seems that they are finally getting to play with personal style in an adult way. Meaning, they are still personalizing the penguin suit without looking sloppy or wearing Chuck Taylor’s in a non-ironic, ironic way. Jon Cryer, Bryan Cranston, and Zachary Quinto (NOM) opted for grey tuxedos. Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Aaron Paul added some print to their looks. Jon Hamm and Eric Stonestreet needed another trip to the tailor and others just needed someone to straighten their tie – bad assistants! First time nominee AND attendee, Max Greenfield from New Girl takes the cake for the men – stunning, masculine and classic.

As for clown of the night, the award goes to Seth McFarlane who tried so hard to be one of the “Rat Pack,” he wore a piece of clothing to represent each member. Not a chance, man.

Getting to the women, the color of the night looked to be 50 shades of blue (I’m sorry). From Lena Dunham in navy, to Jennifer Westfeldt and Jane Levy in rich royal blue, to everyone from Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara, Zooey D, Julianna Hough, and Betty White floating across the carpet in seafoam. Shockingly, neon greenish-yellowish stole the spotlight. Julie Bowen, Julianne Moore, Claire Danes, and Kaley Cuoco all gave it a shot. It was a bit of a mustardy mess.

Funny ladies Tina Fey, Jane Krakowski, and Amy Poehler broke the thermometer they were so hot. Some interesting, “non-traditional” looks worn by Emilia Clarke and Zosia Mamet added a bit of modernism. Edie Falco, wearing Stella McCartney, channeled Gwyneth Goop but her skin was as orange as Padma Lakshmi’s gown. There were some inexplicable prints worn by Julianna Margulies, Elisabeth Moss, Ariel Winter, and Glenn Close.

In the end, there is no one who crashed and burned harder than Ashley Judd. Top to bottom, this is a nightmare of bad Southern bridesmaid proportion. The high, hard hair was not closer to God. The dress color was totally off trend (and has been since 1986) and the seems made it so very bridal. Rarely has Carolina Herrera disappointed in such a way.
