How to Get Comcast’s Faster Internet Speeds

It's Comcastic!

Today Comcast announced a doubling of network speeds for the same monthly fee in select markets. If you live in one of those markets here are the easy steps to make sure you activate and verify the faster speeds.

Step 1: Check your bill. Does Comcast provide your internet service? Is your internet service level Blast or Extreme 50? If so move on to step  2.

Step 2: Look out the window and verify that you live in Boston, Hartford, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, Wilmington, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Richmond or New Jersey.

Step 3: Verify your current network speed by visiting Comcast’s speed test site.

Step 4: Unplug the power from your router and your cable modem. Wait 5 minutes or so (as hard as it might be to go without internet access for 5 minutes the head end should be given a bit of time).

Step 5: Plug the power back in to your cable modem. Once all the status lights are solid except for the activity indicator (usually the bottom one or two lights which will be blinking with activity) then return power to your router.

Step 6: Re-run the speed test to verify that you have the faster speeds.

Comcast has said that the changes will be effective this week so it is possible that your head end won’t be provisioned until later in the week so it may be necessary to repeat the process in a few days.

If you are on a lower tier and have an older DOCSIS 2.0 modem then you will not be able to take advantage of the faster speeds without upgrading your plan and switching to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem.
